What Networking Really Means (And How to Build One That Feels Like You)

Originally recorded on From the Honeycomb with Katerina Burianova

Today I had the chance to record an episode with Katerina Burianova with From the Honeycomb, and we talked about a topic I care deeply about - networking, especially for those just starting out.

People have told me, “You’re so lucky to have such a strong network around you.” But the truth is: It wasn’t luck. It was built with intention.

Here’s what I shared on the podcast - five mindset shifts that have helped me build a network that feels true to me, supportive, and aligned.

1. Start With Intention
Your business - and your life - starts with the people you surround yourself with. And you can’t grow alone. For me, I want to be around dreamers, doers, and actively supportive people - so I sought them out.

2. Put Yourself Out There
Your network won’t magically appear. You have to make the first move (unfortunately!). That might mean DMing someone you admire, going to the event solo, or asking a mutual connection for an intro. Yes, it’s uncomfortable sometimes.

3. Be Authentically You

You don’t need to be a polished version of yourself. You need to be real. The right people will connect with your honesty and vulnerability. Your authenticity is your biggest asset. I also go into events/meet-ups with a learner mindset - What can I learn here? Not What can I prove?

4. Nurture What Works - And Create Space From What Doesn’t
Once you’ve made meaningful connections, invest in them. Check in. Say thank you. Celebrate their wins. Support their work. And don’t be afraid to create distance from relationships that no longer align with your values. Alignment matters.

5. Trust the Long Game

This isn’t about collecting contacts. It’s about building real relationships - with clients, collaborators, and friends. For me, I don’t think you have to keep them in separate boxes. The best relationships are fluid. They evolve. They overlap. That’s the beauty of it.

I’ll share the From the Honeycomb episode once it’s live - I loved the conversation and hope it resonates with you too.

In the meantime:
If you’re building your network from scratch, or feeling unsure where to start, I see you. It takes time, and it takes vulnerability. But it’s absolutely worth it.
