Douglas Sydnor, FAIA

Douglas (Doug) Sydnor, my father, in 2023 celebrated 30 years of owning his own architectural practice, Douglas Sydnor Architect + Associates, a Scottsdale-based architectural firm. He has practiced exclusively in Arizona for over 45 years, completed 230 commissions; and has received over 60 professional design awards and published extensively. Projects ranged from municipal, health care, higher education, transportation, commercial, religious, retail, industrial, and residential. Doug has authored four books including Arizona’s historic architecture, was a Scottsdale Republic columnist, and since 2014 writes the ‘Architect’s Perspective’ column for Arizona Contractor & Community Magazine. Professional and civic involvement has been extensive with serving on over 200 boards, commissions, committees, and design charrettes. Honors have included the 2020 Arts Hero by ONMedia & SRP, 2019 DAR Historic Preservation Recognition Award, 2023 and 2018 Governor’s Heritage Preservation Honor Award, 2011 AIA Fellowship, 2010 Friends of Scottsdale Public Library ‘Spirit of Literacy,’ and 2007 Scottsdale History Hall of Fame. Doug received his Bachelor of Architecture at Arizona State University and Master of Architecture at Harvard University.

Doug worked for Varney Sexton Sydnor with his father (1977-1980), and Sydnor Architects, P.C. (1980-1989). Doug and Reg jointly designed and managed projects such as the St. Joseph’s Hospital Medical Center Major Expansion and St. Luke’s Hospital and Medical Center Major Expansion (1981) ; Arizona Retina Associates, Inc. Suite (1984); Baker Office Building (1984); and the Helen C. Lincoln Learning Center (1988).
